Itinerary
DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN NAIROBI - TO CHOGORIA TOWN TO CHOGORIA GATE
Upon your arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, you will be warmly welcomed by our team and transferred to your hotel. Nairobi, Kenya’s bustling capital, combines rich culture with vibrant city life. We then embark on a scenic drive to Chogoria town. From here, you will switch to 4×4 vehicles for the journey to the Chogoria Gate. You’ll start your trek, walking through lush forests and past waterfalls along the way.
The first day’s hike is relatively easy, giving you time to acclimatize as you make your way to the Mount Kenya Bandas, located at an altitude of around 2,950 meters. You will spend the night here, enjoying the serene environment and the sound of nearby streams.
DAY 2: CHOGORIA GATE TO LAKE ELLIS
Today’s trek from the Bandas will take you deeper into the heart of Mount Kenya National Park. You’ll hike up to Lake Ellis, gaining elevation and enjoying the changing landscapes. This stretch of the journey offers fantastic views and the opportunity to pass by enchanting waterfalls and exotic flora.
Tonight’s camp by Lake Ellis, set at about 3,400 meters, offers a tranquil setting with time to relax and enjoy the surrounding beauty of the mountain.
DAY 3: LAKE ELLIS TO MINTOS HUT
You will continue ascending from Lake Ellis to Mintos Hut, at an altitude of 4,200 meters. The trek becomes more challenging as you climb higher, but the path rewards you with stunning panoramas of the Gorges Valley and the rugged peaks of Mount Kenya. The hike is roughly 12 kilometers and takes about 5-6 hours.
Mintos Hut offers a spectacular viewpoint, overlooking the sheer cliffs and deep valleys. It’s an ideal spot for acclimatization and preparation for the summit push.
DAY 4: MINTOS HUT TO POINT LENANA TO OLD MOSES CAMP
Summit day on your Mount Kenya adventure is both exhilarating and challenging. You’ll begin your ascent early, around 3 AM, from Mintos Hut to maximize your chances of reaching Point Lenana (4,985 meters) for the stunning sunrise. This pre-dawn start means trekking under starlit skies, which adds an element of awe to the quiet, intense experience of climbing in the dark. The path to the summit is steep and often cold, so appropriate layering and headlamps are essential.
As you approach the summit, the terrain becomes rockier, and the air thinner, challenging each step you take. However, the effort pays off spectacularly as you reach Point Lenana just as the first rays of the sun light up the African sky. The sunrise from Point Lenana is truly a highlight, with the African plains below and the jagged peaks of Batian and Nelion to the north bathed in golden light. You’ll have time at the summit to enjoy the panoramic views, capture photos, and celebrate your achievement.
For those experienced at rock climbing, there is an option to take on Nelion point (5,188m) rather than Lenana Point in which the group will split up on summit night.
After the exhilarating experience at the summit, you’ll begin your descent back to Mintos Hut for a brief rest and to gather your gear. The descent is less strenuous but requires careful navigation through the rocky and potentially slippery paths. After resting and refueling at Mintos, you’ll continue your journey down to Old Moses Camp. This segment of the descent lets you pass through different ecological zones, from alpine desert to the upper moorlands, offering a change in scenery and a variety of landscapes.
Reaching Old Moses Camp provides a much-needed chance to rest and reflect on the achievements of the day. Here, at a lower altitude, you might find it easier to breathe, and the evening can be spent relaxing with your fellow trekkers, sharing stories of the day’s adventure. Old Moses Camp offers basic but comfortable accommodations, allowing you to recover and enjoy a good night’s sleep after the demanding efforts of summit day.
DAY 5: OLD MOSES CAMP TO CHOGORIA GATE TO NAIROBI
Your final day on the mountain begins with a descent from Old Moses Camp to Chogoria Gate. The trek through the forested lower slopes of the park offers a gentle end to your mountain adventure, with opportunities to see some wildlife and enjoy the tranquil environment.
Upon reaching the gate, you’ll be transferred back to Nairobi. Once in the city, you can spend the evening at leisure, perhaps enjoying a celebratory dinner with your group.
DAY 6: DEPARTURE FROM NAIROBI
After breakfast, you’ll have some free time depending on your flight schedule. This could be an opportunity to explore Nairobi’s shops, visit a museum, or simply relax at your hotel.
Later, you will be transferred to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your departure flight, taking with you memories of an incredible trek and the stunning landscapes of Mount Kenya.
