Join us for a 19-day expedition to the summit of Aconcagua via the Polish Glacier Route, a more technical and challenging approach to the highest peak in both the Western and Southern Hemispheres. This route is designed for experienced climbers who are looking for a demanding ascent that combines ice climbing and spectacular glacial scenery. The Polish Glacier Route not only tests your endurance and climbing skills but also immerses you in the stunning, icy landscapes that make Aconcagua truly unique.

Throughout this adventurous climb, you will be guided by experienced professionals and supported by strategic acclimatization stops that prepare you for the high altitudes ahead. This route demands more from its climbers but offers immense rewards in the form of intricate ice structures and expansive views from the summit. For those who prefer a less technical path, our 18-day expedition via the Normal Route provides a formidable challenge with a focus on physical endurance and high-altitude trekking.

Itinerary

Begin your adventure in Mendoza, the charming gateway to the Andes. Check into your hotel, then spend the afternoon exploring this vibrant city, known for its exquisite wines and lively cafes. An evening briefing will provide an overview of the trek, allowing you to meet your guides and fellow climbers.
Travel from Mendoza to the historical site of Puente del Inca. This scenic journey through the Andes offers stunning views and the first taste of the mountain air. Explore the natural bridge and thermal springs at Puente del Inca, steeped in colorful mineral deposits.
Your trek begins with a gentle hike to Pampa de Leñas. This initial stretch is crucial for acclimatization, featuring an easy trail that meanders through the valley with the beautiful backdrop of the Andes, setting the stage for the days ahead.
Continue your ascent to Casa de Piedra. Today’s path includes river crossings and more pronounced elevation gains. As you hike, enjoy the increasing views of Aconcagua’s peaks, which signal your approach to the more challenging segments of the trek.
This challenging hike leads you to Plaza Argentina, your main base camp. The route steepens, navigating rugged paths and rocky terrain. Upon arrival, set up camp and take in the stark, striking beauty of the high-altitude environment that will be your home for the next several days.
A vital rest day to acclimatize at Plaza Argentina. Take short walks around the camp to keep your muscles active, while avoiding overexertion. Hydrate and enjoy conversations with fellow trekkers as you prepare for the upcoming climbs.
Engage in a load ferry to Camp 1, also known as Canada Camp, carrying necessary gear and supplies. This activity not only helps to acclimate but also reduces the load for the actual move. Return to base camp for the night.
Another rest day at Plaza Argentina. Utilize this time to fully recover, check your gear, and mentally prepare for the move to higher camps. Stay hydrated and well-fed to maintain energy levels.
Move from Plaza Argentina to Camp 1. The ascent involves navigating through more challenging terrain, requiring resilience and physical strength. Settle into Camp 1, which offers a higher vantage point and clearer views of the surrounding peaks.
Carry additional supplies to Camp 2 on the Polish Glacier. This preparation is critical for your summit push, ensuring all necessary equipment is in place. Return to Camp 1 for the night.
Use this day for further acclimatization at Camp 1. Engage in light activity to maintain your acclimatization level without exhausting yourself.
Ascend to Camp 2, situated on the edge of the Polish Glacier. The environment here is more extreme, with colder temperatures and icier conditions, demanding higher technical skills and caution.
Summit Day is the apex of your expedition, both literally and figuratively. It begins in the pre-dawn hours to capitalize on the stability of the frozen nighttime temperatures which can make the climb slightly safer. After an early breakfast, you’ll set out, navigating the crevassed glacier with the aid of headlamps. The climb is slow and steady, adjusting to the thinning air with each step. As the sun rises, the vast Andean landscape unfolds below, with a spectacular palette of colors painting the sky. The route becomes steeper and more arduous as you approach the summit. You’ll employ your technical climbing skills more extensively here, managing fixed ropes and possibly ice axes as you traverse the final glacier. Reaching the summit of Aconcagua is an overwhelming experience. At 6962 meters, the highest point in the Southern and Western Hemispheres, you are literally on top of the Americas. The panoramic views are unparalleled, spanning endless mountain ranges fading into the horizon. After celebrating your achievement and capturing this moment with photos, you commence the descent back to Camp 2. This return is challenging due to the exhaustion and the need for careful navigation through the now softer snow and ice. Back at Camp 2, you’ll have time to reflect on the day’s accomplishments and recover from the exertion. It’s a time for rest, but also for cherishing the shared experiences with your team, who have now become your companions in one of life’s great adventures.
These days are built into the itinerary to accommodate delays due to bad weather, providing flexibility to ensure a safe summit attempt. Use this time to rest, recover, and wait for optimal weather conditions for climbing.
Begin your descent from the high camps, heading towards Plaza de Mulas. This journey back is a time to reflect on your expedition and enjoy the beauty of the mountain from a new perspective.
Complete your trek with a descent from Plaza de Mulas to Puente del Inca. From there, you’ll travel back to Mendoza, where a final celebratory dinner awaits. This is a time to exchange stories, celebrate your achievements, and enjoy a well-earned rest before departing for home or your next adventure.
