Overview

This is an expedition to the tallest Volcano on the Asian continent, Mt Damavand at 5,671m. This majestic giant is a mountaineering must and has earned its place in the Volcanic Seven Summits mountaineering challenges.

Our expedition will take us on a journey to the summit of this rocky giant. Traversing the mountain day by day, gradually acclimatizing until we reach the snow-capped crater.

Itinerary

Your Summit Expeditions representative will meet you at the Imam Khomeini International Airport, after which we will drive 90 minutes through the city of Tehran to our hotel.

After checking in, the group will have lunch in the historic hotel courtyard. We will have a short briefing and an extensive kit check, where we will assess if any additional equipment needs to be hired.

In the afternoon we will go for a short walking tour of the old city, returning to the hotel to change and shower. For dinner, we will drive to another of Tehran’s historic restaurants and enjoy a traditional feast.

Today we will hike up to 3,000m on a neighbouring mountain in the north of Tehran called Tochal mountain in Darakeh.

We begin our hike of Tochal ascending for 30 minutes until we reach our breakfast point. After a traditional Iranian breakfast, we will continue hiking for another 3-4 hours until we reach the cable car. We then descend the mountain via the cable car and return to the hotel.

In the evening we head to another of Tehran’s iconic restaurants.

Sleeping: Mountain Hut

Trekking time: 4 hours

Max altitude: 4,200m

Today we spend the day acclimatizing to the higher altitude by going for a short hike up to 4,800m. This hike normally takes 1-2hrs.

We then return to the mountain shelter and rest for the remainder of the day.

Trekking time: 3 hours

Max altitude: 4,800m

Today is our Summit Day.

We will start at around 3am, which will leave us around 6-8 hours to reach the summit at a height of 5,671m.

We will reach the summit at around one or two in the afternoon where we will have some time to take photos, and videos and celebrate reaching the highest volcano in Asia.

By 1pm, we would have started descending towards the mountain huts, which will take 2-3hrs.

We will have a well-earned dinner and rest at the mountain hut.

Sleeping: Mountain Hut

Trekking time: 12+ hours

Summit Expeditions is great. I climbed Kilimanjaro with them in October 2022 and they were organized and efficient in both preparing for the trip and on the trip itself. Our team leader, Sean, was knowledgeable and did a great job with keeping everyone motivated. I would definitely go on one of their trips again. Also, I strongly recommend the luxury tent option they have for Kilimanjaro - totally worth it.

Would highly recommend booking a mountain trip with Summit Expeditions! I went with a group of teachers to Kilimanjaro last month with this company and everything from start to finish was fantastic. We had meetings beforehand to prepare us on what to pack and the outline of the trip. Sean, Caroline and Keith all shared their experiences and offered advice before the trip. Caroline was our guide from Summit Expeditions on our trip to Kili and was beyond friendly, helpful and supportive. The team they work with in Tanzania are the best. The food is unreal too. The week ended with us all reaching the summit! Thank you for everything!

We had an amazingly successful trip to the top of Kilimanjaro. Right from the beginning Caroline and Sean were amazingly helpful from pre trip advice, to packing tips and kit days. Once we arrived in Kilimanjaro they filled us with so much confidence and made everything really easy. Their professionalism and strategy to get a group of 26 of us to the summit was incredible and I don't think anybody else could have done so well with the variety of fitness levels that were in our group. I can't recommend Summit Expeditions enough.
