Mount Kilimanjaro

The Highest Mountain in Africa

Mt Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano known as the affectionately as the Roof of Africa because its highest point, Uhuru Peak, is 5,895m/19,340ft and hence is the highest mountain in the entire African continent. 

Mt Kilimanjaro is located in the northern part of the United Republic of Tanzania straddling the country’s border with Kenya. It rests surrounded by lush forest in the Kilimanjaro National park near two prominent townships in Tanzania, Moshi and Arusha. 

Kilimanjaro take between 5 to 8 days to climb successfully depending on which route you take up this mountain. Ironically there are also 7 established routes; Marango, Rongi, Lemoshu, Machame, Umbwe, the Northern Circuit and Shira. 

Mount Elbrus

The Highest Mountain in Europe

Mt Elbrus is actually a twin peak inactive volcano a on a massive mountain range called the Greater Caucuses Mountain Range on the Russian south west boarder. This mountain is not only the highest mountain in Russia but also the highest mountain and volcano in all of Europe making it a part of the Seven Summits 

To climb this mountain successfully you can either approach the summit from the North or the South. The easer of the two is the southern route. 

An expedition to Mt Elbrus  with Summit Expeditions usually approaches the mountain from the southern side, as it has beautiful huts and does not require participants to carry heavy equipment up the mountain. A standard trip will usually take between 7-10 days. 

MOUNT ACONCAGUA

The Highest Mountain in South America

At 6,961m Mount Aconcagua is not only the highest mountain in Argentina but also the highest mountain  in all of South America.  This mountain is located in the Principal Cordillera of the Andes mountain range, in Mendoza Argentina. 

The best time of year to climb Aconcagua is during the summer months in the Southern Hemisphere; December, January and February as these are more likely to have good weather conditions for reaching the summit.

To climb this mountain successfully you can either approach the summit from three established routes; the Northwest Face (Normal), Vacas Valley (Polish) Route or the Horcones Valley rooute. 

CARSTENSZ PYRAMID

The Highest Mountain in Oceana

At 4,884 m (16,024 ft), Carstensz Pyramid is the highest mountain peak of an island on Earth.

This rocky mammoth is also known as Puncak Jaya in Indonesian meaning “Glorious Peak” and as such is the Seven Summits pick for the highest mountain in the continent of Oceana.  

This mountain is located located in the Sudirman Range of the highlands of Central Papua, Indonesia, in the southwest of Puncak Jaya Regency.  A climb to this mountain usually takes between 7-10 days depending on whether you helicopter to base camp or walk through the dense forest. 

 

VINSON MASSIF

The Highest Mountain in South Antarctica

At  4,892 metres (16,050 ft) Mount Vinson is the highest mountain in Antarctica.  

This majestic mountain  was not actually seen until January 1958, when it was spotted by a United States Navy aircraft. The mountain was named after Carl Vinson a United States congressman from the state of Georgia who was a key supporter of funding research in the Antarctic continent.

Mt Vinson is the highest mountain in Antartica and as such is the Seven Summits pick for the highest mountain in the continent of Antartica. 

This mountain is located in the the Sentinel Range of the Ellsworth Mountains of Antartica.It lies in the north part of Vinson Massif’s summit plateau in the south portion of the main ridge of the Sentinel Range. 

The best time of year to climb Mt Vinson is in the Southern Hemisphere’s Summer months of December and January as these are more likely to have good weather conditions for reaching the summit.

MOUNT DENALI

The Highest Mountain in North America

At 6,190 m/ 20,310 ft Mount Denali formerly known as Mount McKinley, is a majestic giant and the highest mountain in North America and one of the Seven summits. 

This mountain is located in the Denali National Park and Preserve in the Alaskan Range in the U.S state of Alaska. 

The first ascent of Denali’s summit was on June 7, 1913, by climbers Walter Harper, Hudson Stuck, Harry Karstens and Robert Tatum. 

The best time of year to climb Mt Denali is in the Summer months of June, July, August and September, as these are more likely to have good weather conditions for reaching the summit.

 

MOUNT EVEREST

The Highest Mountain in Asia

At 8,848.86 m (29,031.7 ft) Mount Everest is the highest mountain on Earth.  This majestic giant is known by the Tibetans as Sagarmāthā which means goddess of the sky and as such is the Seven Summits pick for the highest mountain in the continent of Asia.  

This mountain is located in the Mahalangur Himal sub-range of the Himalayas on the Nepal/ Chineese boarder.  

The first documented ascent of Mt Everest summit was in the Spring of  1953, by the southern Nepal route by  Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary 

On the Northern  Tibetan route the first documented assent was on the 25th of May 1960 by Wang Fuzhou, Gonpo, and Qu Yinhua. 

The best time of year to climb Mt Everest is in the Spring months of April and May as these are more likely to have good weather conditions for reaching the summit.
