Itinerary
DAY 1: ARRIVAL AT KILIMANJARO AIRPORT
Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be greeted by our team and transferred to a comfortable lodge in Moshi. This charming town, nestled at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, will be your base for the night. You’ll have time to relax and settle in before attending a pre-trek briefing in the evening, where you’ll meet your guides and fellow trekkers. This is the perfect opportunity to ask any last-minute questions and ensure you’re fully prepared for the adventure ahead.
DAY 2: MOSHI TO MANDARA HUT
Your journey begins with a short drive from Moshi to the Marangu Gate, where you’ll complete the necessary registration formalities. From there, you’ll embark on your trek to Mandara Hut, located at an altitude of 2,700 meters.
The first day’s hike covers approximately 8 kilometers and takes around 4-5 hours to complete. You’ll trek through the lush rainforest, a habitat for many species of birds and monkeys.
The day ends at Mandara Hut, where you can rest and enjoy the surrounding natural beauty.
DAY 3: MANDARA HUT TO HOROMBO HUT
Today you’ll trek from Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut, situated at an elevation of 3,720 meters. The trail covers 12 kilometers and takes about 6-8 hours to complete.
As you ascend, the rainforest gradually gives way to the moorland zone, characterized by its unique vegetation, including giant lobelias and groundsel. Your efforts will be rewarded with stunning views of the peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo.
The day concludes with a well-deserved rest at Horombo Hut.
DAY 4: HOROMBO HUT (ACCLIMATIZATION DAY)
To aid in acclimatization, you’ll spend an extra day at Horombo Hut. This is an essential part of ensuring a successful summit attempt. You’ll have the option to take a short trek to Zebra Rocks, reaching an altitude of 3,980 meters. This round trip covers about 5 kilometers and takes approximately 2-3 hours.
The rest of the day is for relaxation and soaking in the breathtaking vistas of the surrounding landscape.
DAY 5: HOROMBO HUT TO KIBO HUT
Your adventure continues as you trek from Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut, located at 4,700 meters above sea level. The day’s journey covers 10 kilometers and takes around 6-8 hours.
The landscape changes dramatically as you enter the alpine desert zone, where vegetation is sparse. The trail offers spectacular views of the vast saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.
You’ll spend the night at Kibo Hut, resting and preparing for the summit attempt.
DAY 6: KIBO HUT TO UHURU PEAK TO HOROMBO HUT
The summit day begins early, with a midnight start to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point of Kilimanjaro at 5,895 meters. The ascent covers 6 kilometers and takes about 6-8 hours.
You’ll trek through the night, navigating the steep switchbacks of the scree slope. The effort is rewarded as you reach the summit at sunrise, experiencing the awe-inspiring views from the roof of Africa.
After a brief celebration and photos, you’ll begin the descent to Horombo Hut, covering 16 kilometers in 4-6 hours. The descent will be a test of your endurance, but the sense of achievement and the breathtaking vistas will make it all worthwhile.
DAY 7: HOROMBO HUT TO MOSHI
Your final day of trekking takes you from Horombo Hut back to the Marangu Gate. The descent covers 20 kilometers and takes about 5-7 hours.
Upon reaching the gate, you’ll receive your summit certificates and bid farewell to your mountain crew. A transfer will take you back to the lodge in Moshi, where you can enjoy a well-deserved shower and a celebratory dinner with your fellow trekkers.
